From their website:
Kaffa Crossing is a family-owned and operated café. The person behind the café idea and its distinct Fair Trade philosophy was Yonas Kebede, a long time West Philadelphia resident of Ethiopian decent. Yonas always has dreamt of becoming a social entrepreneur. Following a visit to his country of origin, Ethiopia, two years ago, he was struck by the immense poverty sustained by the people. More than half of the people in Ethiopia live on less than a $1 a day - less than a cup of coffee at Starbucks.

A swell of local coffeehouses offers a new kind of community, along with fresh brews - by Elisa Ludwig
''...
When the coffee prices in his native country dropped, Ethiopian immigrant Yonas Kebede became interested in the idea of fair trade, and began considering how he could support the economy of a developing country while running a business in Philadelphia. The result is Kaffa Crossing, which opened in July in West Philly. A family-run business, the cafe serves breakfast and lunch and will eventually sell fair-trade crafts in addition to fair-trade coffee. Kebede also hopes to host poetry readings and lectures to encourage "the exchange of ideas and create a place where people can communicate."
