    INFO & EVENTS

Owners: Habtamu Shitaye & Frehimot S. Desta

GOJJO, pronounced "Go - Joe", is an Ethiopian term for cottage or hut.  It literary means a house for comfort, hospitality and love.  We invite you to experience our unique cultural blend of food, atmosphere  and service.

Authentic Ethiopian cuisine at very reasonable prices is featured at GOJJO Restaurant & Bar: Injera, the spongy bread made from teff grain and the staple food of Ethiopia, accompanies all entrees. GOJJO is in the historic 1895 "Cherry Tree Tavern" townhouse in University City and serves-up good food and good times: long, welcoming wooden bar overlooking Baltimore Avenue, a garden, two pool tables, and large TVs.

Sure, the joint is dimly lit and the ambience, like a funny-looking Taiwan-made African doll, is a bit iffy. But, since this is West Philly, the unpredictability of not knowing when a weirdo might stumble into this spot is part of the fun. ..." >>more

Neighborhood West Philly bar with Ethiopian flair - By Josh McIlvain

'' Up in West Philly is Gojjo, fondly referred to as the 'Goj,' a popular bar and restaurant frequented by a friendly mix of old-time locals, and newbie Penn and Drexel grads who have settled in the neighborhood. With a large front window that opens onto the street, Gojjo is a fine spot for early evening drinking as the sun angles in to warm your body while you consume a cold pint of Becks (they also serve half pints.) The facade is designed to look like a hut, while the bar room is pretty traditional with three lazy ceiling fans, a white ceiling and dark wooden walls. There's a back room for more drinking, and a pool table and dining room upstairs. Gojjo has a comfortable and inviting feel that will quickly seduce you into becoming a regular..." >>more
