    INFO & EVENTS

    Owner: Ter Mehari

A meal at Blue Nile transports you to the land of its namesake, as you sit at traditional woven basket tables, sip house-made honey wine, and tear off pieces of a spongy bread called injera to scoop up exotic Ethiopian dishes such as kik alitcha (split peas in a mild sauce accented with onions and spices), yedoro watt (chicken and hard-boiled egg in a spicy curry-like sauce) and shrimp tibbs (marinated in honey wine and rosemary, and sauteed with jalapenos and Ethiopian peppers). A special treat is the elaborate Ethiopian coffee service, offered for birthdays and other special occasions (if the staff aren't too busy) after the meal on cushions in a corner of the room set aside for the ritual. "... I have eaten several times now at the Blue Nile (Ethiopian) restaurant in Durham, and the food has been uniformly excellent. In authentic fashion, one sits at a low wicker table and eats with one's hands, using pieces of almost spongy, but delicious, homemade buckwheat bread (injira) to scoop up the scrumptious courses. All the food is organically grown and of very high quality. And the food blends beautifully with sips of the restaurant's home-made honey wine, which is a "must."

Of the various Ethiopian restaurants in which I've eaten (in NY, California, and Durham), Blue Nile is my favorite and also my wife's favorite. Furthmore, the atmosphere is very pleasant, and the owners - especially Ter Mehari - are delightfully warm and ever ready to explain the dishes.

If you have the time, the coffee ceremony, with incense and dancing, is definitely fun and different.

The Blue Nile is open Tuesday through Thursday for dinner and Friday through Sunday for lunch and dinner. It's located in the Shoppes at Lakewood shopping center in Durham, just about a five-minute drive from the Law School. The phone is 490-0462. It's a delightfully unique experience. ..." more >
