Ethiopian emerges on Missouri River

The Blue Nile River originates in Ethiopia, plunges into the plains of the Sudan and joins the White Nile to form the Nile proper. Blue Nile Cafe originated on 39th Street, plunged into the dark restaurant abyss and re-emerged downtown in the heart of the City Market. The most recent location is much the same as the old: small, simple and comfortable. The menu is limited, though authentic, and explicative for those not versed in Ethiopian cuisine. The food is simple in ingredient, though deep in flavor and spice. A very reasonably priced combination platter offers stewed red pepper chicken, hot pepper buttered beef and seasoned yellow split peas. Accompanying almost any Ethiopian meal is a side of injera: Used instead of a fork, this soft teff flour bread is used to scoop up the communally served cuisine. This small, family-run cafe was critically acclaimed and popular in its former location. With any luck, this time reputation and a bustling City Market will be enough to keep Blue Nile afloat...
