THE HISTORY OF THE SQUARE
Abyssinia square took its name during the difficult period of 1922, when a terrible plague broke out in Greece and prompted the then Emperor of Ethiopia, Haile Selassie, to send food supplies such as cereal and cattle, as a token of sympathy and support towards the Greek people. The Greek government then decided to announce the square as "Abyssinia Square", in appreciation of the help and generosity of the people of Ethiopia, with the aim to keep this gesture alive throughout the years and to always remind the future generations of the strong bonds of friendship and solidarity the people of the two countries share. |
