THE SETTING: Who would expect an Ethiopian place to have a really cool bar? I'd certainly come back to hang out in the plush, curved chairs, or perch on a stool along the massive oak bar. And perhaps this spring the pleasant patio, complete with fireplace, will get the attention it deserves. Also, Westerners may be relieved to find standard tables and booths rather than the traditional Ethiopian low rattan serving table — beautiful, but not amenable to elbow-leaning.

The Emory-Clairmont neighborhood's growing reputation as a hot spot for kitchens dishing out eclectic, worldly flavors is perfectly personified by Moya, an Ethiopian eatery that opened in early 2004. A mixture of native artifacts, soft lighting and curved chairs set the restaurant's upscale yet casual mood. An oak bar, a charming patio and a fireplace complete the relaxing ambiance. But it's the menu of traditional Ethiopian cuisine -- beef, lamb, chicken and vegetarian dishes -- that sets Moya apart. If you're unfamiliar with Ethiopian food, your best bet is a meat or veggie sampler platter. Some popular meat dishes include spiced, minced beef served on a bed of banana leaves and spicy chicken stew accompanied by hard-boiled eggs. Veggie selections include shiro, a traditional stew made of ground legumes, herbs and spices, and spicy collard greens paired with a golden split-pea stew. All meals are served with homemade injerra, a soft, 'crepe-like' sourdough bread. Wash it all down with something from the fully stocked bar or one of the many non-alcoholic treats such as an Ethio-espresso drink or a specialty tea.
