This superb Ethiopian restaurant can be a bit intimidating for the uninitiated. There's raucous music from live musicians and ordering can be confusing from a menu full of dishes like wot, tibs and kifko. However, the staff are very helpful and the food is first class. It can feel like a bar at times but most customers will find their visit so enjoyable that they too linger for drinks. This is a great place for a relaxed occasion, and has extensive vegetarian options.

The food has been voted as the most authentic Ethiopian food ever since it opened its doors to Lucky Londoners! As someone who has lived in Africa for a number of years I have learnt to enquire about any national dish from the people themsleves . You can never go wrong. Even when I am not able to eat at Merkato, I have take away and I also ask friends who would be going, to bring me back the food (after all, there is always the freezer!! ) Although the new place is smaller, it has a warm and cozy atmosphere which my friends and I have got use to. ( as the saying goes ' Small is Beautiful! !') The FOOD is the KEY and it has never let us down. I am in the fortunate position where my work allows me to take visitors to London on outings. I have been able to visit most of the Ethiopian Restaurans and almost all the visitors have enjoyed Merkato the most, for its food, value for money and the warm and welcomong atmosphere. It is a league on its own . I would certainly recommend it. All our visitors to London have said that they would visit again should they return and that they would recommend it to others. I rate Ethiopian food at Merkato highly and would reccommend it to all those who enjoy food with a difference.
